Saturn stations retro in Libra

…and who’s in the news?

Former American baseball player, and Libra, Mark McGuire (10/3/1961) confesses to using steroids during his playing career. Uh, Mark…we sorta figured. It’s good to see him get real (a Saturn phrase) although he needs to understand that steroids DID enhance his performance. Simon Cowell, another Libran (10/7/1959) announces that he’s leaving American Idol to start his own show. Two Librans, both at major turning points. Next up? Brett Favre (10/10/1969). To folks outside the US, Brett is the Methuselah of American football.

Saturn Retrograde

On January 13, 2010 Saturn will go retrograde (@4° Libra)- until May 30, 2010 (direct @ 27° Virgo). Saturn rules limitations, structure, form, business, foundations (in every sense), lessons…Yep, Saturn rules RULES. Astrologers like to refer to Saturn as a no-nonsense disciplinarian, but what would we be without the rules and regulations it provides? The Saturn retrograde period is not the time to start major new projects or open a new business. Sometimes that’s hard to resist when the Saturn principle is malfunctioning. It is the time to reexamine and restructure projects and responsibilities we have already begun. Look under the hood and figure out what’s not working (don’t ya love those automobile metaphors?) and is the car even worth keeping? We’ll go into this deeper in a later discussion, but 2010 will be a challenging time for electional Astrologers for various reasons.

Now, some tips for this period for each sign (if you know your ascendant, you may read that too) :

Aries - Hold off on those engagement or wedding plans for now. A visit to your doc, chiropractor, therapist or shaman in the coming months (especially 4/7-7/21) should help you deal with some lingering health issues once and for all.

Taurus - Talk to your health care provider and review your meds, vitamins and exercise regimen. Take on those unfinished projects, but don’t start any major new ones. If you’ve been involved in some serious issues with children over the last couple years, you’ll get a chance to resolve those matters in the April-July period.

Gemini - Finish up those creative projects, ditch the ones that aren’t working. Have kids? Caring for them is your priority in the next couple years. Important home and family matters will be revisited between April and July. Where are you going to live?

Cancer - There are some changes brewing on the home front between now and 2012, but there may be issues around neighbors and siblings that will need resolving (once and for all) between April and July. Take another look at an unfinished writing project. A home that serves as an office will probably suit you in the coming years.

Leo – Your financial belt tightening should pay off later this year, but between April and July you may have to take care of some residual money matters dating back a couple years.

Virgo – Review your investments and expenses. Go through your attic and find some ebay gems. New Years’ resolutions are fine, but you may feel like you’re doing some back tracking between April and July.

Libra - Wait ’til August. OK? Not on everything…just that special plan.

Scorpio - Finish up, clear it out, let it go. Be patient, you’ll be better prepared for Saturn entering your sign in fall 2012 (assuming we’re all still here). Your hopes and dreams have taken shape since 2007 but there’s still some fine tuning this year, between April and July. Who’s had your back in the last couple years? (to readers outside the US, that means: which of your friends has looked out for you? been there for you?) By this summer you’ll know who your true friends are.

Sagittarius – You’ve had since the fall of 2007 to figure out the career thing. But there’s still some unfinished business you must deal with (you guess it, between April and July). What are your hopes, dreams and wishes? What groups of people do you wish to associate with? Your mission is to figure that out over the next couple years. To quote Groucho Marx (or was it Woody Allen?) Would you want to be a member of a club that would have you as a member?

Capricorn – It’s about career integrity for next couple years. The period from May though July may find you traveling for work, taking courses, or revisiting an unresolved legal matter.

Aquarius – Need to fill in some educational blanks? Time to take a hard look at what you need to take your career to the next level in a couple years. If you travel now, it may not be for pleasure. Tax matters, loans, and partners’ money matters work out better after July. For celibate Aquarians, the drought ends this summer.

Pisces – MasterCard, everywhere you want(ed) to be. It’s time to pay it off. Don’t depend on your partner’s cash flow. No shortcuts on that 2009 tax return. As I alluded to in the 2010 outlook, a closer look at your relationship(s) between April and July should lead you to some final conclusions (probably in late May).

Even though Saturn goes direct on 5/30/10, we’re not out of the “shadow” of this retrograde until early September ’10. As Saturn moves retrograde in Libra, it will re-enter Virgo on April 7th, go direct in Virgo on May 30th, then re-enter Libra on July 21st. The period from 4/7 through 7/21 will find us revisiting the issues of the past 2 1/2 years.

Mercury Retrograde for all signs May 2009

Mercury, you rascal. I woke up this morning, turned on the TV to get the weather, and the audio wasn’t working. After fiddling around with some connections, it came back on. Meanwhile, I had to lip-read the weatherman.

Anyone with the slightest interest in Astrology is familiar with the Mercury retrograde phenomenon. The usual associations are: miscommunications, lost letters, misdelivered packages, malfunctioning fax machnies, typos, etc.. It’s simply the messenger of the Gods taking a few steps back in his winged sandals. Rather than freaking out and doing nothing, we can actually make the most of this period. It’s time to reassess certain areas of our lives. So here’s where we may benefit from rethinking, reviewing, and taking a step back to ponder.

Mercury spends the first few days of it’s retrograde in early Gemini and will back in to Taurus on May 13th. Mercury goes direct on May 30th.

  • Aries – You may spend the next few days catching up with siblings, but most of this retro period is about your finances. It’s time to review your game plan. How are those investments doing? Are you even investing? What do you really value?
  • Taurus - I’ll have to give you an example on this one. I know this Taurus who has a storage room filled with useless old crap, that (in his mind) may be useful someday. We’re talking 1980′s magazines, broken typewriters, old clothes…you get the picture (all.. um… retro stuff). Just yesterday, he vowed to go through the whole mess and give stuff away, recycle, and sell what he can. Good job.
  • Gemini - Mercury retros are always tricky for Gemini. Use the next three weeks to look inward. Behind the frustrating cacophony of voice mail, email, twitters, text messages and so on, there’s a peaceful place. Go there if you can.
  • Cancer - Get in touch with old friends this month. You love to reminisce anyway, so now’s your chance. Also, get reacquainted with your hopes, dreams and wishes.
  • Leo - Your career is up for review. Are you making what you’re worth?
  • Virgo - Ponder your education. Thinking about going back to college, or changing your major?
  • Libra - Time to review your financial arrangement with your partner, spouse, or business partner. There’s some potential for confusion in that area especially later in the month (Mercury retro square Neptune).
  • Scorpio - Time to review (reconsider?) your relationship or marriage.
  • Sagittarius - In health matters, get a second opinion. If you’re about to get a first opinion, fine, but wait ’til after 6/10 and get the second one. Got that?
  • Capricorn - “Mom, can I move back in?”. Hopefully you won’t hear those words. Maybe it’s just time for a “sit down” with your kid(s).
  • Aquarius - Think about redoing the kitchen, or the bath (but wait ’til next month). Oh, you’re renting? Re-connect with your roots, your family. Yeah, I know.
  • Pisces – Talked to your brother or sister lately? Your neighbors? It may be time to catch up.

Venus and Mars

venus_and_mars

This week, the Goddess of Love and the God of War will change signs. On 2/2, Venus leaves Pisces and enters Aries, the sign of it’s detriment. On 2/4, Mars leaves Capricorn and enters Aquarius. Venus is up for a challenge and Mars is acting cool. (Although in the Botticelli painting above, he seems rather post-coital). With Venus having entered Aries, many folks are feeling spring fever a little early (in the northern hemisphere anyway). The deal is, we’re in the beginning shadow period of the upcoming Venus retrograde. Venus will be retro from 3/6 to 4/17, but the beginning shadow started on 2/1 and the ending shadow lasts until 5/20. Relationships formed during this period often don’t pan out. Is it possible to suspend your eharmony account until May? You might be better off. Purchasing clothing, jewelry and other items of self adornment is very tricky during this period as well. On a trip to Italy many years ago, while Venus was retro, I bought a really funky Gianni Versace vest, made of wool and rubber. It was a fine idea at the time, now it’s a brilliant mistake (to quote Elvis Costello). The thing has been hanging in my closet for decades and is now listed on ebay. Venus retrograde can actually be the ideal time to get rid of these good purchases gone bad. They used to call it a “white elephant sale”. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. It’s all about values, aesthetic sense, and the laws of attraction, and they’re all going to be a bit askew.

As for Venus in Aries, it’s interesting that Marilyn Monroe, the embodiment of the Venus archetype actually had Venus in Aries (the sign of it’s detriment). Who else would be bold enough to stand there in that dress and sing “Happy Birthday Mr. President”? (In 1962, no less – and with Mars was transiting her Venus, btw).

Mars in Aquarius is now the the dispositor of Venus. This can allow for some spontaneous hook-ups, which could also lead to a “what was I thinking?” moment. A focused Mars in Aquarius, can channel your inner warrior into creating positive social change. Find a cause worth fighting for.

Is all really fair in love and war?
