ACORN, etc.

Well well, it seems that filmmaker James O’Keefe was arrested. You remember, the famous video of the fake pimp and pseudo-ho infiltrating a ACORN offices (O’Keefe and his friend posing)? I believe he is accused of “willfully and maliciously” trying to interfere with Senator Mary Landrieu’s (D) phone system. Of course Mr. O’Keefe is innocent until proven guilty.

I had communicated with a very cooperative Mr. Wade Rathke, founder of ACORN, giving him an astrological perspective and advice on the future of ACORN. Here’s a link to Mr. Rathke’s post of my email to him.

The US Astrology Chart

12 Degrees Sagittarius and America’s Persona

The consensus horoscope for the United States is what is known as the Sibley chart, named after the 18th century mundane astrologer, physician, and freemason Ebenezer Sibley¹ . The chart is based on the date of July 4th, 1776 at 5:10 PM LMT in Philadelphia, PA.
The Declaration of Independence was signed and the USA was born – a Cancer nation, with an Aquarius Moon.
The Ascendant in this chart is 12’21” Sagittarius.
The validity of this data has been argued and debated for years, rectified to 5:14 PM by astrologer Dane Rudhyar, and rectified again to 7:31 PM by others².
I recently heard a prominent astrologer* make a good case for an 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM “birth time” on 7/4/1776.
I have always felt that the Sibley chart, with it’s ascendant of 12 Sagittarius, was a good fit. Much has been written about America as a Cancer nation, the breadbasket of the world, but this article will focus simply on America’s ascendant, 12 degrees Sagittarius.
Astrologers describe the Ascendant as an individual’s persona. The face we show to others, or the mask we wear.
Carl Jung described the persona this way: “The persona is a complicated system of relations between individual consciousness and society, fittingly enough a kind of mask, designed on the one hand to make a definite impression upon others, and, on the other, to conceal the true nature of the individual.”³ Therefore, 12 Sagittarius can be considered the degree which represents America’s collective persona, or America’s mask.
What impression does 12 Sagittarius make, and what true nature does it conceal?

Our persona is reflected in our cultural icons. Say “America” to anyone on the planet and what are some of the images that come to mind? Try a little free-association.

“When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires will come to you” (4)

Among America’s many symbols and iconic characters, one of the most internationally recognizable is Mickey Mouse, and the exaggerated fantasy world of Disneyland.
Mickey’s creator, Walt Disney was born Dec. 5, 1901.
Disney’s Sun is 12’27” Sag. His Ascendant is 25’ Virgo (conjunct the US Neptune and appealing to our desire for fantasy and escapism), and his Moon is in Libra.
He was a film producer and director as well as an animator, writer, and entrepreneur.
Disney embodied the expansive, visionary Sagittarian archetype. Years after Mickey Mouse materialized from his imagination, he expanded on his vision and created two of America’s most popular tourist destinations: Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida.
Beneath his magnanimous exterior, there was another Walt Disney. A Disney described in Marc Eliot’s book “Walt Disney: Hollywood’s Dark Prince”. Eliot portrays Disney as a lifelong anti-semite. Disney was known to be opposed to labor unions, in a Hollywood which relied on the Screen Actors Guild and The Screen Cartoonist’s Guild.
Disney also participated in HUAC (The House Un-American Activities Committee) in the early 1950’s.
The shadow side of Sagittarius is self-righteousness and prejudice with regard to politics or religion.

Centaurs were wild men. They were hardcore party animals and behaved like rock stars.

“Now you got me started
Don’t you leave me broken hearted
Cause I love you …too much” (5)

Another iconic American figure of course is Elvis Presley, a Capricorn. Elvis “the pelvis” (Sagittarius) was born January 8, 1935, 4:35 AM Tupelo, MS. Elvis’ Ascendant is 12’21” Sag. His Sun is 17’ Capricorn. Presley’s gyrating hips and thighs were hidden off-camera in his 1957 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. His half-beast side was concealed and only half the man was seen. Why would we hide half of our centaurean idol? Again, the shadow of Sagittarius is religious dogma and Elvis’ sexual energy (Jupiter in Scorpio) was just too much, so to speak, and the censors had their way.
Presley’s connections to the US chart (and heart) aren’t limited to his 12 Sag rising and are apparent in progressions as well. On the day Elvis was born, the US secondary progressed Moon was 12 Sag. On the day he died, the secondary progressed US Moon was 12’43” Cancer – within a degree of the US natal Sun. What followed was an outpouring of love from fans across the country, many embarking on a pilgrimage to Graceland, Elvis’ lavish home in Memphis, TN.
On 1/28/56 Elvis made his first appearance on national TV, to coincide with the release of his first album. The secondary progressed US Moon was @25’22” Virgo, conjunct Elvis’ natal MC (and again – the US natal Neptune, ruler of music). The secondary progressed US 7th house cusp was 17 Capricorn, conjunct Elvis’s Sun. The US tertiary progressed Jupiter was 17 Capricorn as well.
In Elvis’ converse secondary progressed chart on 1/28/1956 his Vertex is at 13 degrees Cancer, conjunct the US natal Sun. Elvis’ prenatal eclipse was 13 Cap., exactly opposing the US natal Sun.
From Wikipedia:
“When he died on August 16, 1977, it was a huge shock to his fans. However, it soon became clear that a combination of overwork, obesity, depression, bad diet and severe abuse of prescription drugs, accelerated his premature departure.”(6)
Sagittarius is known for overindulgence, as was clearly the case with Elvis. Whether it was women, drugs, or peanut butter and banana sandwiches, he was insatiable.
Another expression of the American shadow.

“Oh give me a home, where the buffalo roam….” (7)

Cable television brought the world another face of America. This…is CNN, or Cable News Network.
CNN’s founder Ted Turner was born on Nov. 19, 1938. His Ascendant is 12’51” Sag. His Sun Scorpio, and his Moon Libra.
Once known as “The Mouth of The South” (another Sagittarian quality) he was known to make an occasional racial slur. But it seems Mr. Turner has has grown over the years and become a pretty decent guy. Whether through his $1 billion pledge to the United Nations, or his founding of the “Goodwill Games” he’s become the embodiment of the higher, evolved side of Sagittarius and the nation itself. Turner is America’s top individual landowner, and possesses the largest private Bison herd in the world.
CNN is now owned by Time Warner and is seen in over 212 nations.
How’s that for Sagittarian expansiveness?

The cowboy of the American west is another centaurean figure, as well as an iconic link to America’s ascendant/persona. From James R. Lewis’s “The Astrology Book” : “…in fact, Centaur loosely translates to “those who round up bulls”.

Elvis, Disney, and CNN. Symbols of the American persona – our face to the world.
From Disneyland to Graceland to Turner’s two million acres, we see a Sagittarius persona that knows no limits or boundaries. The American idea of “Manifest Destiny” is pure Sagittarian. Contrasted by Sag’s shadow of racism, prejudice and overindulgence, they express both the higher and lower manifestations of a Sagittarian ascendant America. One expresses our brightest, highest aspirations, a true “Magic Kingdom”, and the other, our darker nature.

These individuals are more than American idols, they are American icons.

It bears mentioning, actor Christopher Reeve, a Libra, had a 12 degree Sagittarius Moon. A true “superman”, his optimistic outlook and courageous struggle with paralysis also embody the positive nature of Sag. His struggle was felt by most Americans on a deeply emotional level (Moon), since his natal Moon touched the the US Ascendant.

Other Sag rising Americans of note include: Brad Pitt, who’s ascendant is 12º (11º55″ ) Sagittarius, Shirley Temple, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Elizabeth Taylor. All three have Sag rising within 7 degree orb of 12’. Their reported birth times are also suspiciously on the “top of the hour”, or possibly rounded off. Sabian symbols, though not to be taken literally, can offer deeper insight into a particular degree and provide an image, similar to the I Ching or Tarot.
When looking at a particular degree, it is necessary to “round up”, so a degree fraction brings it to the next whole degree. Therefore, 12’21” Sag would be read as 13 Sag.
According to Marc Jones, The Sabian symbol for 13 Sag is:
“A young widow is surprised into a new birth of love.”
Lynda Hill’s version of 13 Sag is “A widow’s past is brought to light”.(8)
Other interpretations describe a “Widow dressed in black”
This imagery is reminiscent of Jackie Kennedy at JFK’s funeral.
The Sabian symbol for 12 Sag is:
“A flag becomes an eagle; the eagle a proud chanticleer.”

Maybe this helps us tweak the US Ascendant to exactly 12 Sag.

Other interesting connections:

George Armstrong Custer was born Dec. 5, 1839. His Sun was 12 Sag.
Others born on Dec. 5th include:
Little Richard
Strom Thurmond

On Dec. 5th every year, the Sun is at about 12 – 13 degrees Sagittarius. On that date, the following events took place:

Dec. 5, 1848, President James Polk announces that “large amounts of gold” have been discovered in California.

Dec. 5, 1932, German/Swiss physicist, Albert Einstein was granted an American Visa.
Dec. 5, 1933, prohibition in the US ends.
Dec. 5, 1955 Rev. Martin Luther King leads the Montgomery, AL bus boycott.
Dec. 5, 1955 – The American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations merge and form the AFL-CIO

Full disclosure: This writer’s ascendant is 12 Sag.

When You Wish Upon a Star

Music: Leigh Harline; Lyrics: Ned Washington

When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires will come to you

If your heart is in your dreams, no request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star as dreamers do

(Fate is kind, she brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of their secret longing)

Like a bolt out of the blue, fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true

Side notes:

Some believe that the US chart has a Scorpio ascendant and point to the eagle as evidence of this. Interesting that the eagle on the dollar bill holds 13 arrows.)

Sagitta is Latin for arrow. The archer points his arrow towards the Galactic Center…beyond his limitations. Spirit over matter, as the glyph of Jupiter symbolizes.

* Astrologer Frank Piechowski, in a lecture at UAC 2008, mentioned the 11:00 am – 1:00 pm time for the US chart.

And yes, it’s the Pluto / Saturn square, more pronounced as Saturn stations retrograde.

Saturn stations retro in Libra

…and who’s in the news?

Former American baseball player, and Libra, Mark McGuire (10/3/1961) confesses to using steroids during his playing career. Uh, Mark…we sorta figured. It’s good to see him get real (a Saturn phrase) although he needs to understand that steroids DID enhance his performance. Simon Cowell, another Libran (10/7/1959) announces that he’s leaving American Idol to start his own show. Two Librans, both at major turning points. Next up? Brett Favre (10/10/1969). To folks outside the US, Brett is the Methuselah of American football.

Saturn Retrograde

daily_planetoid

On January 13, 2010 Saturn will go retrograde (@4° Libra)- until May 30, 2010 (direct @ 27° Virgo). Saturn rules limitations, structure, form, business, foundations (in every sense), lessons…Yep, Saturn rules RULES. Astrologers like to refer to Saturn as a no-nonsense disciplinarian, but what would we be without the rules and regulations it provides? The Saturn retrograde period is not the time to start major new projects or open a new business. Sometimes that’s hard to resist when the Saturn principle is malfunctioning. It is the time to reexamine and restructure projects and responsibilities we have already begun. Look under the hood and figure out what’s not working (don’t ya love those automobile metaphors?) and is the car even worth keeping? We’ll go into this deeper in a later discussion, but 2010 will be a challenging time for electional Astrologers for various reasons.

Now, some tips for this period for each sign (if you know your ascendant, you may read that too) :

Aries - Hold off on those engagement or wedding plans for now. A visit to your doc, chiropractor, therapist or shaman in the coming months (especially 4/7-7/21) should help you deal with some lingering health issues once and for all.

Taurus - Talk to your health care provider and review your meds, vitamins and exercise regimen. Take on those unfinished projects, but don’t start any major new ones. If you’ve been involved in some serious issues with children over the last couple years, you’ll get a chance to resolve those matters in the April-July period.

Gemini - Finish up those creative projects, ditch the ones that aren’t working. Have kids? Caring for them is your priority in the next couple years. Important home and family matters will be revisited between April and July. Where are you going to live?

Cancer - There are some changes brewing on the home front between now and 2012, but there may be issues around neighbors and siblings that will need resolving (once and for all) between April and July. Take another look at an unfinished writing project. A home that serves as an office will probably suit you in the coming years.

Leo – Your financial belt tightening should pay off later this year, but between April and July you may have to take care of some residual money matters dating back a couple years.

Virgo – Review your investments and expenses. Go through your attic and find some ebay gems. New Years’ resolutions are fine, but you may feel like you’re doing some back tracking between April and July.

Libra - Wait ’til August. OK? Not on everything…just that special plan.

Scorpio - Finish up, clear it out, let it go. Be patient, you’ll be better prepared for Saturn entering your sign in fall 2012 (assuming we’re all still here). Your hopes and dreams have taken shape since 2007 but there’s still some fine tuning this year, between April and July. Who’s had your back in the last couple years? (to readers outside the US, that means: which of your friends has looked out for you? been there for you?) By this summer you’ll know who your true friends are.

Sagittarius – You’ve had since the fall of 2007 to figure out the career thing. But there’s still some unfinished business you must deal with (you guess it, between April and July). What are your hopes, dreams and wishes? What groups of people do you wish to associate with? Your mission is to figure that out over the next couple years. To quote Groucho Marx (or was it Woody Allen?) Would you want to be a member of a club that would have you as a member?

Capricorn – It’s about career integrity for next couple years. The period from May though July may find you traveling for work, taking courses, or revisiting an unresolved legal matter.

Aquarius – Need to fill in some educational blanks? Time to take a hard look at what you need to take your career to the next level in a couple years. If you travel now, it may not be for pleasure. Tax matters, loans, and partners’ money matters work out better after July. For celibate Aquarians, the drought ends this summer.

Pisces – MasterCard, everywhere you want(ed) to be. It’s time to pay it off. Don’t depend on your partner’s cash flow. No shortcuts on that 2009 tax return. As I alluded to in the 2010 outlook, a closer look at your relationship(s) between April and July should lead you to some final conclusions (probably in late May).

Even though Saturn goes direct on 5/30/10, we’re not out of the “shadow” of this retrograde until early September ’10. As Saturn moves retrograde in Libra, it will re-enter Virgo on April 7th, go direct in Virgo on May 30th, then re-enter Libra on July 21st. The period from 4/7 through 7/21 will find us revisiting the issues of the past 2 1/2 years.

2010 Solar snippets

daily_planetoid

Here are some thoughts and bits of advice for all 12 Sun signs. If you know your ascendant, you may read that as well. As you know, Solar, or “Sun sign” Astrology is only a glimpse of what’s happening in your life and where your focus is. True astrological insight is gained by studying your entire chart - and the transits and progressions you’re experiencing. That said, here we go:

  • Aries- Are you an early Aries (March 20th to 25th)? You’re probably already experiencing some significant career changes, and the influence of Pluto (transformation) on your solar midheaven (career, public persona) will continue this year (key periods are early April and mid-Sept.). Relationships are especially challenging from Jan. 8th to 18th or so. Breakups and separations may happen, but at the very least you’ll take a hard look at your partner (or maybe you’ve already checked that off your to-do list). In any case, you’re serious in your approach to relationships over the next couple years. Your life could get pretty darn exiting come June 2010, with both Jupiter and Uranus entering your sign. The urge is to take bold, impulsive action at that time. There’s an opportunity for adventure and a whole new way of expressing yourself, but there may be a cost. Partners may offer a lot of “yeah-buts”. The rest of Aries will experience some of these same issues over the next couple years. Focus – career opportunities, personal expression and individuality. Relationships need work. Good luck with the balancing act. Life reaches a critical turning point from early July- early August. On the celebrity front: Matthew Broderick, Gary Oldman and Reese Witherspoon could have career breakthroughs this summer (or provide some fodder for gossip).
  • Taurus - Try not to get too stirred up over family issues in the first two months of the year (been there, done that?). You could regret any aggressive action you take prior to March 10th. Plan a home fixer-upper project, but don’t start until mid-March. Your diet and health will need extra attention in the next couple years. Being proactive will save you a lot of trouble in those areas. This would be an excellent year to go back to school. If you never got that degree, this would be the time to do it. Your friends will be a great source of support this year.
  • Gemini- 2010 could be an excellent year to find a new job or start a new business (after March). Children or younger people could be an area of great responsibility for the next couple years. I imagine Geminis would be terrific at running a day care center with their ability to juggle so much. By the end of the year you’ll probably be surrounded by a whole new group of people. After June, you’ll benefit tremendously from networking. Avoid gambling with your assets, in fact, stick with conservative investments for the next couple years (discuss any financial moves with a CFP).
  • Cancer- Feeling pressure? You bet. And it comes from every direction. Family responsibilities are a main focus for the next couple years (what else is new?). This could be your mom or dad needing you. You may be thinking about your roots, home improvement, moving. Your career could take an unexpected turn – possibly for the better – this summer. It may involve working from home. Early Cancers (6/21-6/30) will likely experience these issues first. Your relationship needs attention, but it’s quite a challenge having to juggle so much. Life reaches a critical turning point in late July- early August. Here are some well known Cancers who will probably make headlines this year: Michael Vick, George Michael, Tobey Maguire, Robert Reich, Ross Perot. All of them will experience the pressure of the cardinal climax firsthand.
  • Leo- Some of the financial pressures should be easing up this year, however there is the possibility of having to deal with past financial matters from April through July 2010. Focus on health now more than ever as there are a couple eclipses involving your health sector. With Mars retrograde in your sign (since Dec. 20th,2009) anger may be boiling over. That can’t be too good for your heart. Mid-march (after the 10th) is better for moving forward on plans and schemes. Dealing with siblings and neighbors could be a challenge in the next couple years.
  • Virgo- It’s been a difficult period for Virgos, having to separate all that wheat from the chaff over the last couple years. More than a few Virgos I know have had to extricate themselves from relationships with losers and are ready for healthier couplings (and one really special one). Yeah, there will always be those fixer uppers, after all – mutual signs excel in dealing with other people’s problems. You’re now in a period where you’ll need to get your financial house in order. Your innate practicality will come in handy over the next couple years. There are financial lessons to be learned now, so be proactive and seek out professional help if you need it.
  • Libra- All the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) are facing tremendous pressures, and you’re no exception. How does one start a new career, deal with unpredictable craziness in relationships, and maintain that Libra charm at the same time? You’re about to find out. Keeping your home life from falling apart may be the biggest challenge of all. There may be a special new person in your life this summer. The last person your expected. Life reaches a critical turning point in late July- early August.
  • Scorpio- Feeling romantic Scorpio? You will. Not only that, 2010 is going to be an extremely creative time for Scorpio. Issues with sibling and neighbors could arise. And what about your family? An ill parent is still a possibility and could need attention. And your home? Ever feel like there is no there there? I’m sure some of you know what I mean. Create your magnum opus in 2010!
  • Sagittarius- Feeling the itch to move to another country? State? Maybe you’re just buying a home or adding a deck. As free and unencumbered as you’d like to be, much of your time will be spent getting your financial house in order this year (and beyond). Make sure not to take any short cuts on those taxes. Your kids will either make you quite proud this year or do the last thing you expected (and succeed).
  • Capricorn- Have have you handled your ambition? If you haven’t taken any shortcuts or stepped on too many toes, you should be fine. Otherwise you could be facing your own personal Watergate in the next couple years. (yeah, ‘ol Nixon had Saturn in his 10th house during that period). A whole herd of Capricorns may be moving this summer, buying new homes, etc. Maybe they aren’t on the same scale you envisioned before the housing bubble burst, but still….you’re a Cap…a double-wide trailer simply won’t do. Life reaches a critical turning point in early April, late July- early August and mid September. Hear that Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira, LeBron James? (and, oh yeah, that Tiger Woods guy). And to some of my favorite Caps of all time – Shane McGowan (the Pogues), Larry Csonka and Don Shula (happy 80th) – take care of yourselves gentlemen.
  • Aquarius- A long painful Chiron transit is nearing it’s end for most water-bearers, but for those born after Feb. 12th the process of healing continues. It’s still a confusing time for those later Aquarians, but also a period of inspiration. There could be huge improvements in store financially in 2010…and perhaps a pleasant surprise in May or November.
  • Pisces- 2010 will present many opportunities for you. Many Pisceans are emerging from a rough time in relationships (which may be revisited from April though July), but nothing keeps a Pisces down (except themselves very often). Late Pisces (March 14-20th) will still feel some of that Uranian excitement and unpredictability. You may be making a final decision on a relationship the last week of May. Then it’s time to move on. This is especially true of later Pisces as well. The less you rely on other people’s resources over the next couple years, the better off you’ll be. Some sources of income may dry up, just as new ones begin to emerge this summer. 2010 is about seizing the moment.
